    About this playbook

ORB — the classic rule-based opening-range breakout system.

    The opening range

Every session opens with a burst of volatility as fresh liquidity comes online. ORB marks the high and low of that opening window and treats the band as the session’s opening range.

Shaded on the chart, this range is the reference everything keys off. The playbook does nothing until price commits cleanly to one side of it.

    The opening range

    Going long on the break

When price breaks cleanly above the opening range, the playbook arms a long. Rather than chase the breakout candle, it waits for price to pull back and retest the range edge, then enters on the retest — a tighter fill with the stop tucked just beneath.

The target is set at 4R, four times the risk, so a single winner pays for several stops.

    Going long on the break

    Going short on the break

The short side is the mirror image. A clean break below the range arms a short; the playbook waits for the retest back into the edge and enters on the rejection.

The stop sits just above the range — with a small buffer so a marginal wick doesn’t knock you out — and the take-profit again targets 4R.

    The settings that matter

Two dials shape how it trades. Range Entry Depth controls how far price must retest back into the range before the order fills — shallower for aggressive entries, deeper for more confirmation.

SL Buffer sets how much room sits between the range edge and your stop, so normal noise around the level doesn’t take you out early. The opening-range window and trade window are fully configurable — point ORB at whichever session open you trade — and the 4R target rounds out the configuration.

    Profit Trailing

Profit Trailing is a system-wide feature that locks in gains as a trade runs in your favour. As price clears each R milestone the stop ratchets up a rung — BE1, BE2, BE3 each secure a slice of profit, turning an open winner into a protected one.

It’s optional and fully configurable per playbook. On ORB it turns the 4R runners into low-risk holds.
